Well, when I read about the author at
http://www.davemoulton.com/background.html I don't see any reason to
doubt his report. He clearly is a professional and heavily involved in
audio & music education. Also, he favors digital.

About the vinyl degradation: there's is difference between specs like
those from RIAA (out of memory: after 1 play 20 kHz, 2nd play 17 kHz
etc), early pickups and later & current high quality pickups.
Quadraphonic vinyl playback is 47 kHz.

I was having a little fun with that statement ;-) I think a good 180-
or 200-grams all-analog LP, turntable, phono pre-amp, ADC and DAC is
all you need. First recording without ADC/DAC and second with. As you
use the same full analog source for both, this would result in the
exact test-set of 2 LP's you need. They might be less quality because
of many reasons but those factors would be the same for both; only the
ADC&DAC in the chain for one of them is the difference.

Well, according to some info I found, vinyl can do well over 50 kHz
without any trouble. Wear from playing is so different between quality
of pickups: from horrible "grey after 10 plays" to no wear at all with
laser pickups. You can throw $$$ at the problem and it'll actually
help.
I agree that digital can do the same, but mainstream doesn't... yet...
