Unfortunately that isn't going to be possible for a lot of recordings.
The incompetent mastering we've been subjected to for the last 20 or so
years has taught a whole generation of artists and producers that music
is supposed to sound like that. And so they have made their initial
recordings and mixdown with excessive compression and clipping. The
damage is done at step one, before the mastering engineer ever gets his
hands on the stuff.
