G'Day All

CASA recently conducted a post-implementation review of Parts 45 and 47, and a
Notice of Proposed Rule Making is currently out for comment until 26 February.
The stated objective is to cover off the subject of the current general and
specific exemptions and rationalise with exemptions issued by other countries.

See http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:STANDARD::pc=PC_100339 for more
details of the Part 45 PIR - to check that gliders are properly catered for.

  from 45.085

  (2) The markings:

  (a) must be legible; and

  (b) must have no ornamentation; and

  (c) must be of a colour that clearly contrasts with their background.

  --------------------------------

Any colour would appear acceptable, the 75mm that Mike quotes (45.065) is the
smallest size reference I found (only for gliders and experimental aircraft
though).

I read the CASR as allowing other markings (eg comp markings) on the aircraft
as long as they are not "confusing" to the rego marks. And seems to be no
restriction other than this.

Interestingly there is a AC 45-01(2) which notes an exemption (till 2012) for
underwing marking of aircraft (less than 5700kg) which don't fly outside of
Australia (That's how I read it anyway).

This might be relevant. CASR Part 45 (volume 2 if you look for it via
    the CASA website)

    (c) in any other case as given in the following table.
Minimum heights of characters in markings on certain kinds of aircraft
    Column 1
    Item Column 2
    Kind of aircraft Column 3
    Minimum height (mm)
    1Rotorcraft300
    2Glider75
    3Airship500
    4Manned free balloon500

CASA has re written this in the last 3 years. I did phone them when I
was refinishing the BD-4 3 years ago. The CASA bloke admiitted the
then existing regs on this were in his words " a horse's arse". Only
    that reg, I wondered?

This doesn't seem like much of an improvement and appears to differ
from the GFA manual. Quel surpise!

Is there still some reason for GFA to exist?

Anybody figure out how many sets of markings you need on a glider
    according to CASA?
