I concur with everything Jean said. In addition, I'd like to mention
something we tell all volunteers, but haven't told Alan yet.

There are a couple really cool OOo features that will make your life, and
that of the mantainer, a lot easier:

1) Tracking changes.
Go to Edit > Changes > Record

OOo will then keep track of everything you change in the document. When
the maintainer gets the file back, he can see all the changes and accept
or reject them individually.

This feature makes it easier for reviewers to submit changes, and for
mantainers to know what has changed. It also means that you can be more
daring when you edit. You don't have to worry about whether the author
will like your changes or not. If he doesn't like them, he can reject
them. No harm done.

2) Notes
Go to Insert > Note

This is a good complement to tracking changes. It's like adding sticky
nots. For example, the note that said "this could be worded better, but
I'm not sure what to say". You can add a note to explain your reasoning
behind a change. You can say "I don't understand this section". You can
leave a note saying "good job Alan!".

You get the idea.

So I strongly recommend you use both of these features when you edit
chapters.

Cheers,
Daniel.
