I have noticed the reverting-to-default problem with many files I have opened since I upgraded to OOo2.4. I think it's a bug in OOo 2.4. So far I've mainly been working with relatively old files, whose contents have a long and complicated history, often having started out in OOo1.x (as the Fields chapter did). I haven't done any controlled testing, so I don't know if this happens with newer files (those containing no content copied from old files).
