I am happy with inserting non breaking spaces where feasible. I do not
know how to force a non breaking space in a field though, so things
such as Figure 2 may still break across two lines.

I do not know how either as I have attempted to do them for over a year now, to no avail. Perhaps, a macro might help.

And speaking of macros, would it be possible to effect a run-in subhead with a macro? That would be a decent plus for all OOo users and maybe encourage users of other DTP programs to embrace OOo. You sort of kludged one in your test chapter when you combined the OOoStrongEmphasis character style with the body text paragraph style.
