On moving all the customizations to an appendix I am OK with it, but I
am not sure if I understood correctly: will it be a separate chapter?
Yes. I use the word "Appendix" to mean a separate chapter. For
example, 0219WG-Keyboard Shortcuts is Appendix A of the Writer Guide.
On the level of details in the description of the options, I am again
in favour not to put too many details, on the other hand there is a
large percentage of users who will only ever use Writer therefore we
should try to find good compromise.
I wasn't speaking so much of the level of details in the descriptions,
but rather of whether all the OOo options should be covered in the
Writer Guide as well as in the Getting Started guide. The existing
book includes only a few of the most immediately relevant general
options (view, print, and appearance).
For example, increasing the memory
allocated to OOo increases dramatically the performances (even more
improvements can be obtained removing Java): should this information
which is not Writer-specific be captured?
Captured, yes, and definitely added to the Getting Started guide,
where the info on memory allocation is not very detailed.
For the Writer Guide, perhaps that topic and a few others (for
example, changing the default paths and defining custom colors) would
better go into the proposed new appendix on customising OOo.
