I almost never use underlining due to its interference with character descenders...

I agree, so let's NOT add a style for underlining... until and unless someone comes up with a compelling need for it.

As to the various flavors of "emphasis": Perhaps we should adopt the same or similar terms for them that Word 2007 does, so that their usage would be more "catholic" (lowercase usage).

I don't see why we should modify names in our templates (which are for our own internal use) to be consistent with MSWord (2007 or any other version). If someone (yourself, for example) wishes to adapt our template for more general use, they can easily change the style names to suit their own preferences or needs.
