Nice, forceUpdate works :)

Here's my results (Firefox 3, MacBook Pro, FP10.0.12.36 (debug)):

Results from running the normal mapping bust demo and no movement in scene:

*forceUpdate: true (specular and environment shading works)*
Environment Map = ~20 FPS
Phong Shading = ~16 FPS

*forceUpdate: false (specular and environment map doesn't work)*
Environment Map = ~30 FPS
Phong Shading = ~28 FPS
