Darcey have you cleaned context3D of the mesh before you reload the data? I
did pretty same example as your (waving mesh) but with Flare3D .The memo was
fine ,no leaks .Steady 31/s0 fps , 1000 triangles> I know the engines are
different but may be it can be helpful .I change the vertices positions
,then copy the whole context3D of the mesh to a temp var. Then clean the
context3D of the mesh. Then assign to it the copied context. Still have not
dived into Away4 to check how it works there. But tell me if it was of any
help.

BTW
 I am in no way departing from Away3D ,just was making some experiments with
Flare. ;)
