When you deal with a large database and you want to find specific
information such as all people born in a certain location having as much
location information as possible is what you need.

Being as I use TMG I can enter Detail, City (Freguesia), County (Concelho),
State and Country. When doing a search and I want all people born in the
Concelho of Ponta Delgada it is possible. Using the Island is important if
I want to find people from a particular Island. Or I can search for a
combination of place criteria such as City and Island (Reberinha I found on
two different Islands as also some other city locations). Some of these
searches would not be possible if you only put the city and State (Acores)
without the Island in your program.

When I add the name of the church in the detail I can now search for all
events at Nossa Senhora da Rosario Church in the city of Achadinha. (the
city is necessary as there is more than one NS Rosario.)

program

Thanks for bringing up this topic. It's a good reminder that I've yet to be
consistent throughout my whole program( mostlly on how I'm spelling the
names of the places like ie..Azores or Acores....Sao Miguel or San Miguel.)
One day soon I should go through my data and fix the way I'm typing things
in. But mostly in the Legacy program it divides where someone is born,
baptized, married, died, buried. I usually type in for ie..

BIRTH-Sao Miguel, Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel Isl., Azores

BAPT-Matriz Sao Miguel, Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel Isl. Azores

MARRIAGE-Sao Lazaro church, Agua d'Alto, Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel
Isl., Azores

What do most of you people do for this? You are entering a birth, baptism,
marriage, death. It doesn't matter. Your screen opens up and asks for the
place where this event happened. My program has the following fields:
Detail
City
County
State
Country

Detail = the church, but I use it only if there is more than 1 church in
that freguesia (Sao Miguel Arcanjo & Sao Pedro are both in Vila Franca).
City = freguesia
County = I put the island there. I know it's closer to the concelho, but
before the CCA came online, the concelho didn't matter. I pulled the roll
of film for my freguesia.
State = I put Azores there
Country = Portugal

I wouldn't too much work to put the county as the concelho and put the state
as Sao Miguel, Azores. But in sharing Gedcoms, we probably should start to
be consistent with each other.

And I DO NOT abbreviate any more. Or not in the places (in my side notes I
abbreviate). SM? What's that? Santa Maria or Sao Miguel? F? Faial or
Flores?? You want your great-grandkids to inherit this and as adults they
pull it out and can't figure out your abbreviations?

So how do all of you fill in your place fields?
