Paul, #472 is the passenger or berth # for the entire family. The numbers are sequential, so its not the passport #. Occassionally, the passport # is listed, but that's not it. There seems to be something written between that # and the names, however, its too small to read from this magnification. It appears that your GF used Manuel (B)? Silva as his preferred name when boarding so he may have done the same when registering for a passport. As for his residence, its not clear where he or his family lived concurrent to their departure, it merely states Loucao as the "place of birth" for the entire family. I would guess that it was Lomba da Loucao.
Suggestion: Manuel may have travelled prior to this voyage. Often, the father, or, head of the household, would travel (alone, or, with a relative) to scout out locations that would be suitable for the family to settle. People often settled in communities where their neighbors, or relatives, settled. My grandfather traveled three times, and checked out both east, and, west coasts, prior to bringing the entire family to the US. Sometimes they worked for a while, to earn enough money to pay for the family's passage. Manuel is in his mid thirties, and had several children, so you need to do a little math to determine when such a scenario may have occurred. I would look, first, at the longest period between children. There were five years between the births of Ermelinda, and, her sister, Maria dos Anjos, that would give someone enough time to travel, scout, and/or work, and return. So, figure your passport date close to Ermelinda's birth. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.
