LaRonda, The modern Portuguese spelling is Linhares. That should be used in your genealogy program. You can make a notation of how you found it spelled in the various documents by entering that into the note or memo field.
To do Portuguese research (well, anywhere in Europe, actually), you need the village. If you don't have an island yet, you are not ready to research the Azores yet.
