The translation in Tablets of Abdu'l-Baha might be by Sohrab. It is
in any case early, because volume 3 was first published in 1916.
As to the question of marriage, according to the law of God:
First
you must select one, and them it depends upon the consent of the
father and mother. Before your selection they have no right of
interference. (Abdu'l-Baha, Tablets of Abdu'l-Baha v3, p. 563)
I have not found an earlier version of this. Given the dates, and
presuming you are not Methusaleh, you are not likely to remember an
earlier version. Perhaps your memory is of this tablet and your
memory is unreliable, or what you remember is a LATER retelling of
what is in TABA. That is, someone else has been unable to locate the
source and has retold it from memory, and you remember that. Or
someone with access to the Persian of this or a similar tablet has
translated it. It's a subject that would come up more in
correspondence with the Persian Bahais than the western ones, so
Abdu'l-Baha might have answered the question several times in
different tablets.
In the Pilgrim's notes from Valera and John Allen, visiting Shoghi
Effendi in December 1954, we read
"Ruhiyyih Khanum asked the Guardian to tell the friends at the
table
about the progress of his work on the codification of the Aqdas.
He
responded by telling us it was proving to be quite a difficult
and
time consuming task and he was doing it in outline form. It will
include five parts, dealing with the following: (1) Appointment
of
Abdu'l-Baha as Center of the Covenant and Interpreter of the
Writings. (2) Laws and ordinances which comprise eighty per cent
of
the Aqdas. (3) Exhortations, admonitions and warnings. (i.e.
Admonitions on marriage and divorce - **no one can interfere in
marriage before choice is made,** and divorce is not actually
forbidden). (4) Tablets to the Kings, Ecclesiastics and Rulers.
(5)
Miscellaneous. (This last includes the section of Questions and
Answers which was added by Baha'u'llah to clarify certain
points.)
In all there are some 200 items to be classified and an
additional
100 in the Question and Answers section.
The Guardian mentioned the fact that the Persians had long had
the
Aqdas because it helped them to break away from the Mohammadan
laws
and gave them laws of hygiene which they had needed."
