The Baha'i Studies Listserv I am disinclined to keep going on this if it's going to turn into an argument. I have to reply in short cos i am at work.
-I am not claiming any ascendancy over 'acedemics'. "-> But in any case there are apparent differences in man and woman > that go beyond the physical. Such as?" Abdul'Baha talks about womens superior qualities of tenderness etc and there is plenty of quotes on this in the article Steven posted. Do you mean you cant even see these? Didnt read them? " Why should > women have the right to be the first educators of their children and not > men? Men can be. In practice women generally are." If Abdul'Baha says it is then it is. Not going to nitpick about how men and women can reverse roles. If women want to go to war in mens role they can too but it is not ideal. " 'Outward equality'? Does that imply that inwardly they are still inferior?" Comeoff it. How did I imply that. Outward equality in the sense that outwardly women seemed less than men even though they never were spiritually. It is the social developments versus the unchangable spiritual truths. Do you really think women were inferior than men inwardly before this? Impossible look at Mary Magdelane and Abdul'Baha talks about her. She was one if not the foremost disciple of Jesus. "> Wow, that's a really insulting ad hominem counter-argument which is > really irrelevant to what was said. It is not an issue of being ad hominem. If we are in fact not saying anything different about the roles of women and men than Christians and Muslims then we can't really say we are making any progress when it comes to equality." That is not true. I am implying that womens and mens roles will never be the same because men and women are NOT the same. I feel you are being predjudice in this issue. Are you saying men and women should all have the same roles? Think about it it is simply not intended by God or they would be made the same way and they are not. Can a man bear a child in his womb or nurse the child? No. THis inequlaty exists. It is undeniable that we have an inequality made by God right here before us. How then can we claim that man and women will adopt the same roles in the physical world? it is neither ideal or desirable and that is why those quotes from that article say show quotes where Abdul'Baha says women shouldnt go to war their poor hearts cannot bear the carnage. Sure if you want to be a fanatic lets make the women go to war and lets make women do hard man-like labour were they can build big manly muscles and be like men. Then you can strive towardsperfect equality in roles. Happy? You are fooling yourself if you think this is achievable or desirable and in accordance with the natural order things. We both know women will achieve outward equality with men through education and have all the equal opportunities in this world as men. That is all that is meant by equality, they will no-longer be denied these things although inwardly they were always equal.
