Sounds as though Launch Services (the part of the system which associates files with applications) has developed a bit of indigestion. :-) Try this: quit BBEdit, then relaunch it by double-clicking its icon in the Finder (do not use the Dock or any utility). If that doesn't do the job, a Launch Services reset is probably in order so please ping support with your system version.
