The Mac AIO helps with the Mac, but it doesn't even solve the issues of
installation on the Mac.
The user needs to know that there are Addons to install, and how to
install them. And they need this even if they know nothing about J and
don't want to read another install page, much less the Package Manager
guide.
I have collected everything a user needs to get a full system going.
Please consider using that as a starting point.

I think this discussion has gone way off track.
I agree with Bill that the Mac AIO will greatly simplify the OSX
installation, and will have a go at a new set of instructions.

An AIO installer on the Mac should be trivial. Just turn the folder with a
full installation into a dmg. I can take a stab at that next week.

children (and even most adults) do not like to read and follow long

page which contains:
direct link for AIO installer
ask them to click, download, run the file
ask them to run Qt IDE and type
install 'all'
to update base library as well as install all addons.
We need to build an AIO installer for mac.

I agree about Henry's clarity and like his explanations of the steps
that
are needed.
Nevertheless, the base system and the IDE are distinct things, and IMHO
trying to shove everything on a single page is confusing and makes
things
harder.
Our primary user base are software developers, and this group should
have
no difficulty understanding the concept of a base system plus addons.
This
is how almost all software gets distributed nowadays.
The schoolchildren and other novices are a different matter. For them,
a
quick start page with no options would seem to be best. One such page
for a
full install should suffice. Minimal installs are primarily intended
for
developers distributing applications, so would not apply to this group.

Chris,
I think Henry's approach is very good. It has always seemed awkward
to
me
for there to be a separate page for the qt ide, and then another for
the
addons especially because they often did not refer to one another or
if
they did, the references/links were hard to see.
Perhaps a compromise would be a "Quick Start" page as you suggest,
but
Henry's clarity would be missed without a page such as his. It sounds
like
there are 2 different "Quick Start" pages needed: one for a full
installation and one for a minimal installation. I think Henry's page
accomplishes both, somewhat.

I want to revert to separate pages for the base and for the Qt

As Bill points out, it is the case that Qt is optional. That your
users
need it should not complicate the installation for others.
By all means steer the novice as you think appropriate, but this
should
not
affect the base installation page. A simple statement on that page
can
direct them to the Qt IDE page.
I am surprised that all this is apparently caused by your students
having
difficulties with the Mac. This makes it more appropriate that we
have
a
"Quick Start" page that gives the few instructions needed to
install
J+Qt+Addons for those who just want everything in the default
location.
This page can have sections for each platform.
