In testing this again, I now find these two calls working properly,
and the next call failing, i.e. in the same verb:

  gtk_source_buffer_set_language sb,sl

In each case, the problem was that these calls hang, not that they
give a null or invalid result. This suggests that the real failure
occurs earlier in the sequence.
