if tags are missing / not present, the question is what should server do? right now server has a pref that allows for the scanner to discern if TPE2 should mean "album artist" or "band"
in that same area, you could add prefs, such as: "if artist tags are missing/blank, scanner should then use the filename for the artist value in the DB (default)" or "...scanner should leave the DB value blank" ...let the user decide, but mark the defaults. another one: "if album artist tags are missing/blank, scanner should then use the artist value for album artist too (default)" or "...scanner should leave the DB value blank" or "...scanner should use the filename" ...again, let the user decide, but mark the defaults. one thing to consider, is that for a cd which has differing artists on it, if those differing artist values are used to fill in blank album artist values, you will have multiple album values / meaning listed in server, one album per each differing artist. frankly that's just an invitation to get your values filled properly to avoid that occurrence (although some might like it that way), but regardless its something that would happen in a lot of other software as well.
