No, you can have different bands on different tracks.  e.g. extending my 
previous example, you could have an album by "Jimmy Page" and "Robert Plant", 
but one track features a guest "John Paul Jones".  The album artist could then 
be set to "Page & Plant", with different artists and band aliases for each 
track.  The album artist always overrules when listing "<album> by <artist>", 
even if "list albums by band" is chosen.

Yes, I mean it would have to be considered when setting album artist in the 
scanner, that it would be a link table to artists, not necessarily a single 
album artist per album.
