The effect on the artist list is that the VA artist disappears and the track artists are all shown in the artist list. (Track artists only from compilations, that is. Track artists on non-compilations never appear in the artist list.) Drilling into the track artists shows each album on which they appear, but the album artist shown for each of those albums is exactly as before: Various Artists.
I stand corrected - thanks! I'm probably trying too hard to understand the code instead of look at how it actually behaves.
