Just as an example the Australian Taxation Office website, which a) probably has a budget at least twice as big as BGGs (after all it collects the taxes for an entire small country, b) is about 99% static information with no reviews, session reports, forums or chit chat, went off-line for the entire Christmas New Year period, i.e. well over a week for maintenance.
