This is the reason it did not work out of the box. The preview (as well as Skim's snapshot feature) works with discrete scalings, in order to support choosing the scale factor in the popup (continuous popups don't exist). Monday's nightly will have a slight improvement in that it will try to update the scale factor during the gesture rather than at the end. That's the best I can do. Thanks for testing.
