There's a good (and informed) take on a variety of issue related to
studded tires and winter riding at http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/studdedtires.asp
. The information is scattered in amongst his descriptions of the
Nokian and Schwalbe tires he carries. He's pretty opinionated -- but
based on past experience his opinions are worthy of attention.
Of course, ymmv -- and mine certainly did. I got some Hakkapeliita
W106's last year, after all...they're a better choice for plowed
roads, not as heavy etc.. $100 a pair cheaper too. Not as good as,
say, the W240's at climbing out of ruts, but hey, this was Madison.
How many days of the winter did we have to deal with unplowed deep
snow and rutted streets? Last year. Oops. My bad.
For all that, the W106's still worked far, far better than virtually
any normal tire* . As I remember reading on Icebike, one of the
biggest dangers of studded tires is remembering that your shoe does
not have studs _before_ you put your foot down.
PS - I realize that this is a pretty broad statement since there are
countless tires I have not tried. I could easily be wrong. For
example, if anyone wanted to give me a Pugsley, so that I could see
how those 4" wide tires work... ;-)
