Just to let you know, my build was based on GNOME_PREFIX=/usr and
GNOME_SYSCONFDIR=/etc. I really don't see the point in having a
 separate versioned gnome sysconfdir. Once built, I was surprised how
there were only a small number of problems I had to solve, namely the
dbus starting up and the video driver. Even the audio worked off the
bat. I could only get gnome-shell to work with the nvidia drivers. The
nv drivers just didn't cut it, they kept going back to fallback mode.
Another suprise(?) move is that gnome-screensaver has all it's
screensavers removed. You only get a blank screen. I think this piece is
still in a transition state.
