Hi Gerald, Yes, the O/S is already installed, but Windows has something they call out of bvox experience.. What this amounts to is setting up your date and time, network if you want one, and registering and activating Windows. There may be a couple of other items, but I don't remember them right off. If you are setting this up on a machine you just bought, you will have sound thru the speakers because all of the drivers are already installed for your hardware. Now, as to installing Vista or Windows 7 on a box with XP already installed, you will have your screen-reader during the first part of the install, because you are installing from a host O/S, but this will only be available until the machine re-boots for the first time. After that, just leave the machine alone for maybe an hour, and then hit the Windows key + the letter U, and Narrator will come up, allowing you to finish the install. Note: The only way you will have sound for Narrator, is if you have a USB soundcard, such as a USB headset. The reason for this is, that you won't have the drivers for your soundcard, but a USB headset doesn't require any special drivers. If you want more detail on the out of box experience I mentioned, then stay-tuned, hopefully I'm reloading a machine this weekend from an xp installation disk. HTH, Richard Q. I'm a little confused. If Narrator already worked when you turned on your new computer for the first time, wouldn't that indicate that Windows was already completely installed? Don't all new computers come with the OS ready to go? It seems to me that the only reason to installWindows on a new computer would be to install a different version than the preinstalled version, like for example, installing XP on a new machine equipped with Vista. But it sounds like installing Windows is not for the technically challenged or faint of heart like me.
