I bought a 2tb Western Digital external hard drive yesterday. I had
another one, but I bought a second one for backup purposes. I had it
connected to the computer via a USB hub, and the old one connected to
the back of the computer. I was copying files from one to the other.
The folder was quite large so it was taking a very long time. People
started doing work outside my house so I then plugged my USB
headphones into the hub. I have had problems with this hub ever since
I got it in that often when you plug more than one device into it, it
tends to not recognize the new device. Of course I couldn't disconnect
the hub, so I disconnected the headphones, figuring I'd just turn up
my speakers since it was loud outside. Unfortunately, unplugging the
headphones had an adverse effect. It also somehow stopped recognizing
the external that I was copying files to. Now I can't get it to
recognize the drive at all. Once, when I plugged it in, it said I
needed to format the drive to continue, but I hit cancel and restarted
the computer, hoping that it would just recognize again as I had a
similar problem before and that fixed it. But no--no matter where I
plug it into the computer now, it says the device has malfunctioned
and Windows does not recognize it. I then tried disabling and
reenabling the driver, but no go.
I feel so stupid right about now, if I hadn't plugged in my headphones
I wouldn't have broken my new device. I seriously hope there's a way
to fix this because I didn't buy it to break it if you know what I
mean. I'm running Vista Home Premium if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
