Hello. It definitely sounds like the drive was damaged. The
first thing I would recommend doing is plugging the drive into
another computer so we can see for sure if its the drive or the
computer that's at fault (more than likely, its the drive, but
its a good idea to check) If the computer is the problem, than we
probably have some work to do in device manager, although I'm not
sure what, considering you already tried re-installing the
driver. If the drive doesn't work with any computer you connect
it to, you will have to try reformatting it. The first thing you
will need to do is plug the drive into your computer, and see if
it shows up under disk management. To open disk management go to
the run dialog box by pressing the windows key with r. In the
run dialog box, type diskmgmt.msc
When disk management opens, it should show a list of all drives.
If your drive appears in this list, select it and press the
applications key. From the context menu, select "format," and
follow the given instructions to format the drive. If you find
out that your computer is what's causing the problem, or you are
unable to reformat the drive, let me know, and I'll see what else
I can think of.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] what to do when USB devices won't
recognize
I bought a 2tb Western Digital external hard drive yesterday. I
had
another one, but I bought a second one for backup purposes. I
had it
connected to the computer via a USB hub, and the old one
connected to
the back of the computer. I was copying files from one to the
other.
The folder was quite large so it was taking a very long time.
People
started doing work outside my house so I then plugged my USB
headphones into the hub. I have had problems with this hub ever
since
I got it in that often when you plug more than one device into
it, it
tends to not recognize the new device. Of course I couldn't
disconnect
the hub, so I disconnected the headphones, figuring I'd just turn
up
my speakers since it was loud outside. Unfortunately, unplugging
the
headphones had an adverse effect. It also somehow stopped
recognizing
the external that I was copying files to. Now I can't get it to
recognize the drive at all. Once, when I plugged it in, it said
I
needed to format the drive to continue, but I hit cancel and
restarted
the computer, hoping that it would just recognize again as I had
a
similar problem before and that fixed it. But no--no matter
where I
plug it into the computer now, it says the device has
malfunctioned
and Windows does not recognize it. I then tried disabling and
reenabling the driver, but no go.
I feel so stupid right about now, if I hadn't plugged in my
headphones
I wouldn't have broken my new device. I seriously hope there's a
way
to fix this because I didn't buy it to break it if you know what
I
mean. I'm running Vista Home Premium if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
