I have read and it is my experience that external hard drives, especially powered external hard drives, should be connected to their own port. I think this is due to both power and data transfer rates. Putting a hard drive on a hub with any other device will slow down the transfer rate at best. Ideally, a powered USB device should be connected directly. If powered devices, like printers and scanners, must be connected d to a hub, it is better if it is a powered hub. Hubs work best for devices like keyboards and mice.

Hi,
Well, I plugged the drive into my laptop and it recognized right away.
I formatted it on the laptop and now things seem to be working fine. I
now have both external drives plugged into the back of the computer.
Thank you guys for your help.
Now, I have a related question. The hub does have a power cord, but it
didn't start giving me trouble even when it wasn't plugged into the
wall until today when I tried to plug my headphones into it. I asked
this same question on another list and someone responded back by
saying that plugging an external drive and a pair of headphones into
the same hub is a bad idea. Why would that be? I thought the point of
a hub was so that you could plug multiple devices into it at once and
not have to worry.

Hi Desiree,

Is this USB Hub only plug into the computer to get its power or, is it a
powered USB Hub and plug into a wall outlet socket to have AC / 120 volt
power as well? If it is not a powered hub, the USB port might not be
providing enough power to the Hub to sufficiently run the external drive.
Have you tried plugging the 2nd external drive into a USB port by itself to
see if it will work that way? Hope you get this issue figured out! I know
just how frustrating it can be when things quit working for no explainable
reason. Take care.

I did try that with no luck. Thanks for the suggestion though.
