Hi Richard,
I found some interesting info on Aztec temple and pyramid designs. 
Apparently some were built over caves, they had underground streams to 
collect water in the dry months, they have stone steps leading up and 
down to the various levels. Most of the temples were made from adobe 
blocks, dirt, and eroded away. Some of the more complex ones were made 
of stone.
So perhaps wooden ladders and stone steps could be used for climbing to 
new levels and the floor could be dirt.
