Yes, the wires definitely matter.  The screws are likely marked with color 
dots or maybe text.  The cord you get will have black, white, and green, 
wires in it.  The green is safety ground, the white is neutral and the black 
is hot.  Your only choice is to get sighted help.  You can likely buy a 
three wire cord with the plug molded onto it.  If you can't find one then 
buy a short extension cord and cut off its head.  6 or 10 footers aren't all 
that expensive.
