So I take it that the primary purpose here is to punish the kids rather than

I totally agree, but with this younger generation they'll think it's child 
abuse if you take a belt to a child. Believe me, if my Dad or Mom told me 
not to do something, I didn't need to be told a second time. Because I 
surely get a good ass kicking. Now a days, they'll give there kids time 
out, and send them to there rooms where they more than likely have a TV, 
computer, and all kinds of toys. What kind of punishment is that?
