Good,

If you can get access to the rear behind the shower controls you may be able to 
discover the problem. It is most likely a linkage. Many of these, even quite 
old ones can be repaired if you can interest a good hardware merchant to look 
up the parts. I love the old British term of Iron Monger for such merchants.

  I took the shower nozzle completely off, no help. I found the piece 
  of paneling in my office that probably allows access to the pipes, 
  but I have an L shaped desk, a total of ten feet that has to be moved 
  before any more progress can be attempted. I must say, I just love
