Folks,

When posting a message to the list, be sure your mail client puts
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" as the "To" address. I've noticed recently
that some clients put "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" - messages sent to
this address do not get to the list, but wind up in the admin's (my) inbox.

If you post a message and it doesn't show up, please check this before
contacting us for support.

Thanks again, and a happy new year to all.

Regards,

" In 1991 (maybe other years, don't know squat about Volvos), Volvo
attached spongy foam to the inside of the clean side of the airbox.
After 12 years, this foam deteriorates. Then chunks of it suck up
against the intake screen of the HFM. Then when the turbo takes a big
breath of air, the restriction causes the intake hose to collapse flat
and severely limit power until you lift again.
Amazingly, it didn't take us too long to find this. Just thought you
would be amused. Go turbobricks!"

At least this doesn't require much disassembly to fix. Let us not forget
that for several years BMW would fit self-destructing rear shock mounts,
requiring regular and frequent replacement unless the car was used extremely
gently in climes with little temperature variation. My local dealer, on
experiencing my indignation that a non-service item was practically expected
to fail after two years and 30k miles, said "this is BMW's way of telling
you to slow down over speed bumps and avoid cobblestones". Avoiding
cobblestones in some European cities can be very difficult. I told him
buying an A4 was my way of telling BMW to engineer the car properly next
time. It looks like they have.

The E46 M3 shock mounts are still pieces of cr*p.

If you are going to track the car at all or autocross it, go
with GC or JTD ones.

Howdy,

My girlfriend's '93 BMW 325is w/factory lsd has started make a bit of
noise when turning at fairly slow speeds. The noise is kinda halfway
between a groaning and a grinding, I notice it only when turning, and only
at slower speeds (may be there at higher speeds and I just can't hear it
though...)

I'd been thinking rear wheel bearings, but then it occurred to me that it
could be the diff as well. Its also slowly getting worse.

Is this a common failure? How bad are rear wheel bearings to replace on
this car?

Thanks!

Mark

I was about to write a detailed reply when I saw Jay got it down pat.

Do as he says and you'll most likely be good to go. I will add that I
strongly recommend Red Line 75W90. DON'T use their 75W90NS....

My symptom was a low whirring sound. I was going to have the diff
fluid analyzed but when I found it to be gray with metal fillings I
knew it had no more life in it. I ended up going the Quaife route
from Brett.

Mark,
BTDT.
Sounds like maybe the LSD. Fluid change may do the trick. Make sure
you/they add the correct friction modifier, or it will be worse after
than before. Mine was a few years ago, so I'm a bit foggy on all the
details. My bet is someone on this list will be able to (and will) go
into excruciating (very helpful) detail with you on this matter, which
means my response, well, is just sorta quick...
YMMV. HTH.
