Howdy,

My girlfriend's '93 BMW 325is w/factory lsd has started make a bit of
noise when turning at fairly slow speeds. The noise is kinda halfway
between a groaning and a grinding, I notice it only when turning, and only
at slower speeds (may be there at higher speeds and I just can't hear it
though...)

I'd been thinking rear wheel bearings, but then it occurred to me that it
could be the diff as well. Its also slowly getting worse.

Is this a common failure? How bad are rear wheel bearings to replace on
this car?

Thanks!

Mark

To All,

I found this neat little tool on the web...

     http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi

It will decode your VIN number showing the basics
about the car. And it's FREE!

Anyway,..., I thought it was cool!

I am having a problem with my ABS system on my 4/94 build M3. The light is
being triggered for no apparent reason. I cannot repeat the fault and it
will come on without even using the brakes, usually under acceleration. I
had the codes read and they virtually every code was stored. Anyone have a
similar experince or any suggestions? Thanks for the help and best wishes
for the New Year.

I just had a similar issue with my MY94 325i.

It ended up being a combination of the grey ABS relay and a wheel sensor
whose harness got pulled apart when I ran over a tree limb down in the road.

IIRC, there is a Tech Bulletin on the grey relay as a common failure point.
Your dealership Service Manager should be able to help you with that.

A list of those codes would help. These early units had problems with the
ribbon cable inside the unit fracturing. It can be repaired, with some
electrical ability.

Hi All,

This is a bit off topic but my girlfriend is a bit upset.. I went out to
walk the dog, and when I came back towards the house, I noticed her car
(2003 Tiburon) had a pretty big oval dent (about 10 inches in diameter) in
the rear quarter panel on the passenger side. It is high up enough on the
panel almost near the hatch. and it doesnt look like a car hit it since the
dent is too high up, and would be in a very unlikely spot based on where the
car was parked, and it looks more like it was kicked or punched, or someone
ran into it with thier body. This is really recent, since I took her car
to the grocery store at about 7pm and there was no dent when I came back and
parked it. The car was parked on the street, with the drivers side against
the curb. (one way street) So it happened between the time it was parked
and when I noticed it.

She is really worried about her insurance going up, and isnt sure if she
should put in a claim. Since the event happened while the car was parked,
and there is no other driver involved or a moving violation, I am wondering
how the insurance company treats these issues.

She also had a big argument with the insurance company over the summer
months, because of a missed payment that was the fault of the banks, where
they cancelled her policy and it took a letter writing campaign to the
corporate offices (president) get her policy reinstated, and have them admit
that they cancelled it without just cause. She is really concerned that
they may cancel the policy after this claim. (only 1 accident before this.
other drivers fault)

Any suggestions? Insurance companies here in Ontario Canada are attracting
a lot of negative attention due to thier tactics lately, cancelling policies
and jacking up rates arbitrarily..

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

My engine swap project is underway, and so I'll soon have an M20B25
available. It's in good condition, but some eBay research suggests that it's
worth more as parts than as an engine. The head, manifolds, ecu, harness,
F.I. system, alt, p.s. pump, compressor, etc. separately seem to go for well
above what an engine goes for.

But of course the hassle factor is greater. So before I start tearing into
this thing, does anyone need a good M20? I have had literally no engine
problems of any kind since I bought the car in 1998. 161k, burns no oil but
oozes a little at the front, passes emissions check with flying colors.
Thorough maintenance records. Oil changed diligently at 3-3.5k. Timing belt
has 40k on it. Gas mileage has always been exceptional - averaged over 27mpg
this summer after a job change made my commute mostly freeway. Prior to that
was 22-25 with much city driving.

Still in the car for another day or two. $500 keeps me from selling it as
parts. I have recent experience in shipping engines, so that's not a
problem. Let me know if you're interested.

Happy New Year to all :-)

I've had a problem with my driver side window for a while - it just
doesn't want to wind all the way up by itself. It only closes fully if I
grab it between my hands and pull up. Eventually today I opened the door
to take a look and I found that one of the metal levers is basically
cracked and twists when the window moves up and down. This picture shows
pretty much where it is and what it looks like:

http://mirizma.org/kay/e36window.jpg

It's not from my car but it looks the same - the red lines are where the
crack is. I looked briefly at how it hangs together, seems like it is
riveted into the door together with the window motor - is that really
so? Can the lever be changed on its own? Or the whole guide/lever
mechanism? Or do I need a whole new door? (Hope it's not the last one!)

Best regards,
Pavel

It's the window regulator.

It's rivetted into the door.

It has to be changed as a unit (you transfer over your old motor)

Use 6mm bolts to secure the new regulator after drilling out the rivets.
Make sure you use lock washers.
