Here's one possible good reason: to improve handling. I guess it depends
on the nature of your other repair needs.

I was thinking the other day...

After my whole slew of suspension questions for my E36
325....

Could I have bought Bilstein Sports for an M3 and used
them in my 325? I don't see why not, but maybe
someone has some BTDT or reasons why it wouldn't work.
I was thinking of it because I started thinking about
other upgrades for the suspension (swaybars,
specifically) and know that the M3 has its swaybar
mounting points on the strut towers, not the control
arms, and (apparently, AFAIK) that is one reason the
M3 handles a bit better.

There aren't many high performance tires in this size. Take a look at
Firestone szep. Bridgestone technology at a lower price. Tire rack carries
them for approx. $100. They stick like glue and are very quiet. On my 2nd
set.

I just finished installing the Sach's suspension
on my '95 525i and love
the feel. SNIP

Steve,
Care to elaborate on your experience with the Sachs
setup? This is the "Sachs Sporting Set" right? I am
still saving up for a new set of springs and shocks
for my '92 535i. Not too harsh? (I have never heard a
discouraging word about this matched set but it never
hurts to ask)
Rgds,
Jon

Yes, it is the sporting set that you keep hearing about. It's firm but
not harsh. My E30 M3 with a Bilstein/H&R setup is harsh in comparison.
I have been driving over bumps that I avoid in the M3 just to feel the
difference and they get soaked right up. This is how the car should
have been from the factory. Also, it is lower but doesn't have that
"slammed" look. It's tasteful looking. This is my wifes car, but I
hope she wants to keep the touring.

Thanks for the replies. I had assumed shock absorbers were either good or
bad. Hadn't realized that their performance slowly but surely deteriorates.
Four replacements have been ordered.

When I removed the throttle body (to access the ICV) on my E30 w/S50 engine,
I noticed that the inside of the manifold was lightly oil-covered. Engine
uses no oil. Is this normal?

kind of. If you trace the hose from the front of the head on the drivers
side you'll find it connects to the TB. I imagine if the motor is getting
on in mileage or you spend a lot of time at high rpms you'll pull some oil
fumes into the TB and hence into the manifold.

By the way if that hose isn't sealing properly it will cause idle problems.

Old racers trick is to take that hose and put it into a catch tank. Those
oil fumes reduce the effective octane of the fuel.
