Steve, There is a dimmer sensor on the dash that will adjust the brightness of the radio display etc. Cover it with your hand and the display darkens. It is on my E46 (and my E30 as well.) I'm guessing you might have some passing clouds or other passing shadows (trees, light posts) that make it noticible. I'd test the sensor first to see if it seems to be properly functioning. I took this out of my 96 M3 about a year ago when I replaced it with a CD43 unit from a Z3, and it's been sitting sealed in a bag ever since. Perfect condition AFAIK. Comes with original Code Card and manual. Help me clear off my workbench, no reasonable offer refused. A friend of mine noticed that the chrome trim around the lighter was missing when it returned from a dealer service. The service dept. was willing to replace it thinking it got sucked up in the vacuum cleaner. The individual ring was not readily apparent on the parts system, so they ordered the entire cigar lighter assembly. It arrived sans chrome trim ring. Can anyone help with perhaps a part number even?
