I think BMW started using the aluminum impellers in 95...but not in all
models (better check)

In my 99 328 yes, the owner's manual will say one way or another

Check out this post on Roadfly for general E36 issues...

Dunno, I don't have remote :)

No... Strictly OBDII. Go to Autozone and ask nicely for a free reading if
needed.

Trunk, right hand side under the plastic shelf

I believe sometime in May '96 they changed to metal. My March '96 328i had
plastic - now changed to a metal impeller :)

I have a pair of Michelin Pilot Sport tires, brand new from the Tire Rack, in size
255/35-18. I bought them to put on the front of my wife's 330i
(matching the rear 255's), but we're making the jump to 19's instead. They cost me
$512 plus shipping from the Tire Rack, asking $425 plus
shipping.

These tires will fit on the rear of the E36, the front of the E36 with fender rolling
(I run 255's all the way around on my '95 M3), and front/rear
on the E46.

On the E36 M3s, they switched to metal impellers sometime in '96. The 328
*should* be OK.

As a data point, the metal water pump on my '98 M3 started leaking from the
bearing at about 51K.

>2. This car has an auto tranny. (OK the car's not for me) Is this a
>lifetime fluid transmission?

I believe so, yes.

>3. Any common failure points on '97 3's or 328's in particular?

Cooling system and power steering hoses are problem areas.

>4. Back door lock does not seem to work on remote and the latch has to be
>operated by hand. Is this likely actuator?

Most likely. I've replaced all 4 door lock actuators on my M3.

>5. Does this model allow ECU code checks with the pedal activation? How
>many pumps? 3 didn't seem to work.

Nope. You'll need a code reader to read codes. You can get the Peake
Research reader for $149 from Peake, or other online vendors. Some
independent BMW mechanics will read CE codes for you gratis, depends on the
mechanic.

>6. Where's the battery? under seat or in trunk?

Trunk, right hand side.

Hi listers

Can someone tell me where the knock sensor is located
in the E36 325i engine. Does it need to be replaced
if pinking is consistant under hard acceleration on
start-ups, even using 92 octane gas ! Any info will
greatly be appreciated.

Henry

The knock sensor should set a fault, and a check engine light, if it needs
to be replaced.

While it's possible that it can be bad without setting a fault, it's
unlikely.

I'd be looking at fuel quality, air leaks, carbon build up, etc, first.

Besides, the knock sensors are a real pain in the arse to change on the
M50/M52 engines. Come to think of it, they're nasty on all BMW engines.

I'm always amazed that people would spend money on tools to DIY and risk
breaking their bimmers rather than take their cars to a dealer.

*tongue firmly in cheek*

P.S.: 15" of speaker wire resets the SI codes just as well as a $50-200
Peak tool or a $20K Modic.
P.P.S.: Personally, I would much rather use a Modic, but than again I would
much rather use it on a McLaren F1....

Celisa,
Whichever path you decide to take, do not join BMW Car Club of America
(www.bmwcca.org) or worse yet, get in touch with a local chapter
(www.lscbmwcca.org).
That would completely spoil the challenge of shopping for a competent
bimmer-friendly shop or making friends with other bimmer owners hell-bent
on having fun with their cars.

Group,

I know that this is going to sound like a strange parts request, but I would
like to find the glass part of the ellipsoid in the euro headlights. I'm
working on a project for which this piece is compatible. If someone has a
damaged headlight lying around, I would gladly pay for this piece.

This is the round, magnifier-looking piece of circular glass in the low-beam
part of the lens.

If anyone has one, please let me know and I'll paypal you right away.

Junk yards are full of ellipsoid headlights. Not necessarily BMW but many
other makes.

Folks,

I've said this before, and now it's past the point of "oops, I
forgot."

All-caps subject lines are unacceptable. This is a mature list where
people are capable of reading a subject without it YELLING AT THEM.
Not only that, it's in the UUC Digest rules:

http://www.uucdigest.com/listinfo/listinfo.html

So here's the deal: no more all-caps subjects or posts. Any single
transgression at this point results in a loss of the offending
party's posting privileges for an unspecified period of time.

Thank you,
- Rob Levinson
