I don't know if this is the shop that you eventually used, but it might get you on the right track. Sorry to hear about your crash. However, I did find an independent shop, and it's in Dallas on Denton Dr, and it's called Priore. I plan to try them. I refuse to go to independent shops that cost as much as the dealer. In an effort to avoid large towing charges and being stranded, I'm thinking about having the water pump, thermostat and belts changed, since all are original. The car was produced in 11/96, which I understand is the exact month when they changed from plastic impellers to metal on the water pump. Is there any way of determining which water pump I have, short of removing it? Also, is this preventative repair money well spent? I know some of you have gone a long time before water pumps failed, but having been stranded over X-Mas with the 540 after it failed, leading to a $250 tow, a $750 repair (with new belts and fan), and a pretty uneasy weekend waiting to find out if the dealer we towed it to would be able to fix it in a timely fashion, I'm not quite so eager to press my luck with the 328. I will defer to You Who Know More About BMWs! Thanks, Donn Hinsdale, IL '97 328iA '04 RX330 (was '98 540/6) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I believe the changeover month was 5/96 (at least on the E36 M3s that was the case) where some M3s produced that month had plastic pumps and some had metal. Subsequent to 5/96, metal pumps were the rule. > Is there any way of > determining which water pump I have, short of removing > it? Also, is this preventative repair money well > spent? There is no way of determining outside of the production month. Also, some of the new water pumps are once again a form of plastic and not metal. I do believe this preventative repair is money well spent since the failure rate is so high. Also, after seven years or so, it might not be a bad idea to refresh your cooling system (radiator, pump, thermostat, fluid, hoses, belts, etc. as you see fit, not all may be necessary) as the water pump bearings have a habit of failing as well as the impeller. For that matter, the failure rate of certain after-market water pumps is fairly high related to the bearings based on what I have heard. There are a number of OEM water pumps out there, some are more durable than others. Although, there are some on the E30 list I am on that think all BMW radiators last 150k - 200k miles so what do I know... > I know some of you have gone a long time before water > pumps failed, but having been stranded over X-Mas with > the 540 after it failed, leading to a $250 tow, a $750 > repair (with new belts and fan), and a pretty uneasy > weekend waiting to find out if the dealer we towed it > to would be able to fix it in a timely fashion, I'm > not quite so eager to press my luck with the 328. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> OK here is an update on the '99 convertible. I checked the a/c system and instead of having 250-300 max pressure it had 445 pounds of pressure. Any ideas about what could be clogged?? I did unplug the system so it would not come on, so hopefully the compressor will not be ruined if it isn't already. Any ideas??? Thanks, ben [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ok group this is a strange one for sure. This is a 1999 Mustang Convertible with a V-6. My friend just bought it and she said it made a funny smell and sound. I just got home from going for a ride with her and while we were driving w/ the a/c on all of a sudden it was like somebody vented a nitrous bottle on the starting line. Between the right fender and the hood freon came out for about 3-4 seconds about 6-8 inches high. Just lasted for a few seconds and then it quit. We stopped the car and I looked under the hood and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I will say that I smelled something just as soon as I saw the freon coming out between the gap. Any ideas what it might be and what I should do to fix it? I have no idea if he is away now or not, but I have found that sending him an email early in the morning usually gets a quicker response than sending one later in the day-no idea why, but that has been my experience. And not that Brett really needs any more kudos, but I know that I greatly appreciate his very reasonable prices on his tool rentals-he has helped me out tremendously in my effort to maintain my BMWs. On my '93 325is, I've been having an ABS light... A friend has a snap-on engine diagnostic thing that is supposed to work with BMW's... After hooking it up and scanning for codes, we briefly see the following codes: 17, 82, 98, 113, 114. Then, after about five seconds, the snap-on tool complains about no communication and erases the display. Cycling the power to the car and rescanning via the tool gets the list again for five seconds or so... Anyway, I can't find out what these codes mean anywhere with a cursory check. Seems like everyone and their brother has a reference to the four digit flash codes, but not these two digit codes... The Snap-on tool has some sort of built in info on them, but past 82, 98, 113, and 114 being codes related to wheel speed sensors (apparently) we don't have time to get more info. Any help would be greatly appreciated! So maybe I meant "two and three digit"... :-) I should mention that I have the TIS and ETK, but am a complete novice with them... I can't find any fault code information there, though that likely doesn't mean its not there, just that I can't find it...
