At 09:21 AM 7/30/04, Tom Reynolds talked about:

>Until I get an answer I can live with (like my wife) I have to ask- is
>there any major problem with the E36's front subframe that needs to be
>looked at in a pre purchase inspection, let's say?

They can have an issue with cracking where the motor mounts bolt to the
subframe. My race car had this issue, but it has been a track/race car for
half it's life. No issue on the M3, even with the ~10K track miles
(~145,000 total). Both car have been reinforced with a kit from Turner
Motorsports.

>I've also been told that the rear shock
>mount failure/replacement is rare,

Rear shock mounts fail on a regular basis on E36s - perhaps you mean rear
shock tower sheet metal damage? *That* is rare, but does happen on occasion.

Any decent pre-purchase inspection should inspect these areas. Depending on
your relationship with the inspecting shop, you should be able to ask that
these areas be looked at specifically, just to be sure.

Hope that helps,

Chris, besides the vent lines Chris P mentioned, it could also be:

Fuel pump seal
Gauge sender seal (one on each side)
Gas lines/clamps to the above

All of those things are on top of the tank, and are reached through access
covers under the rear seat. Also, all are easy and cheap to fix.

The driver's side sender seal on our '91 325iA started leaking while I was
at O'Fest. My wife was using the car back home, and called me at the
Motorsport Banquet at the Petersen Museum to ask what she should do. There
is pretty much only one place inside the museum where I even get a cell
signal, but I digress. I had her call AAA and have the car towed home.
The tow company wanted to call the fire department simply because gas was
leaking - sorry, digressed again. They got it towed home without getting
the fire dept. involved.

Turns out there was a dent in the bottom of the gas tank (courtesy of a
previous owner), and the tank bottom was pushing up on the sender. Once
the sender was removed, it would not re-seal. While I laid on the ground
looking at the bottom of the tank, I had a friend pound out the bottom of
the tank by beating on a short wooden broom handle with a rubber mallet. I
would tell him which way to move the broom handle, he would pound, etc.
Eventually he got the bottom of the tank pushed out enough so that the
sender would seal (we used a new O-ring, or is it a Chevron seal?) without
making contact with the bottom of the tank.

Thanks Chris and Scott, I shall go poking around to see what I can see in
the right rear well, and under the seat. I'm putting my money on the vent
hoses, as my car spent most of its life in Toronto, similar to what Chris's
car has lived through.

Look new. One of the wheels has a stress crack that Discount Tire says
should be rebarrelled ($200?). Will take best offer.

The reverse gear in my 2000 X5 4.4 SP has almost stopped working. The X5 moves slowly
in reverse no matter the engine speed, but it won't climb a gentle incline. The
forward gears all seem fine. My mechanic checked the fluid level (it was fine) and
said that I needed a new transmission. An X5 tranny should last longer than 82,000
miles. My web searches didnt turn up much. Any ideas? Is it time to quietly buy that
extended warranty?

Thanks,
Bill

as another poster said, vent and tank rust is a common issue with these
cars. there is a metal vent line that runs on top of the tank from side to
side. it rusts out. will leak when full. tank replacement is required.

the job isn't that bad. it is only nuts and bolts, just lots of them. good
used tanks(southern cars) can be had for $100. it is a one day job in your
driveway. btdt.

don't believe there are any known issues with front subframes on street
cars. you can see and feel a rear subframe mounting point problem without
removing the subframe. i am sure dealers charge big bucks for the repair,
but i watched a torn rear subframe mounting point get repaired in less that
two hours last weekend. start to finish, on grass, with jackstands and a
portable welder. if you know what you are doing and really need to make the
qualifying session for the race, anything can be done! ;-)

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all. I just finished replacing the timing belt on my E30 (1987 325is),
and I've got one more question. When I removed the upper timing belt
cover, I found that one of the two bolts that holds it on was missing.
Must not have been replaced by the person who did the job before me. I'd
like to replace the bolt, but I don't what size it is. Does anyone know
what I would need to replace it? It is the smaller of the two bolts and
the one on the left if you are looking at it from the front.

Thanks, Jason
