I hadn't realized I could. I tried turned it near the base, but I didn't
want to try harder, fearing it might make a nasty breaking sound.

So, is it simply a matter of grabbing and turning the mast?

Yes, it just screws into the black rubber base.

BMW sells excellent hose clamps. I keep a set of these handy:

Size
(mm) BMW Part No. Approx Price
----- --------------- ------------
12-15 ?
15-17 ?
15-19 07-12-9-952-107 $ 0.90
18-24 07-12-9-952-109 1.16
23-29 07-12-9-952-111 0.42
28-33 07-12-9-952-113 0.50
32-38 07-12-9-952-115 0.78
37-43 07-12-9-952-117 1.00
42-48 07-12-9-952-119 1.72
47-54 07-12-9-952-121 1.28

BMW sells more sizes, in particular larger ones. Email me for those
part numbers. Get a 6-mm flex driver if you don't already have one.

Our '85 325e has all the original BMW hoseclamps and they are indeed good. I
have never had hoseclamps that old hold up so well.

How much does BMW get for the clamps anyway?

Yeah, the monkeys bit was only partly in jest tho...

2 types of junkyards;

The "Pick-a-parts" of the world: all makes and models. Usually these
places distinguish between foreign and domestic but that about it! It's
pot-luck in those places, 50-50 shot at finding something decent, but
the prices are right! I just got an e36 abs pump for $50, lord knows if
it works! The lady thought it was a master cylinder. Damn those furren
cars got funny shaped parts! But it's furren and it's aluminum so it's
gotta be expensive, gimme $50 bucks and we even! LOL

The other is the German exclusive or even the BMW dedicated yards. These
guys is where you go when you don't wanna mess around. Expect to pay
good $ for what you want. Many times I wind up at the dealer with my
jobber pricing getting very close to what the BMW/german yards want for
rare parts.

Boy, I bet you pay top dollar for that diff.

Unless the "monkeys" bit was in jest...

Howdy,

Caveat, I have yet to read the Bently procedure for this. I apologize...

I need to replace the control arms on my '93 325is. I have m3 offset
chassis side bushings at the rear of the arm (can't remember what they're
really called).

Pulling the entire arm _looks_ straight forward except possibly for the
bushings above. Will I be able to remove/reinstall the bushings without
special tools? How about with a hydraulic press and some patience?

If I do need special tools, can someone describe for me how they work so
that I can make my own?

Thanks!

Mark

Howdy,

A question on Delrin front control arm bushings for an e36 (and it sounds
like e30's are similar?)...

>From looking at the pictures, it would appear that the inner metal shell
of the bushing stays fixed to the control arm while the outer metal shell
stays fixed to the chassis mount. Wouldn't this mean that these bushings
would add stiction/binding to the front suspension?

My initial thought was that a roller bearing setup would be much more
suited for this application. Or, along with a modified control arm, a
heim joint.

What's the real story?

Another question related to these bushings...

Is there an inner steel shell that rides on the control arm that I can hit
with a press?

Otherwise, it would appear that I'll destroy the bushing getting it off
the arm, correct?

These pictures are inconclusive...
