The Hooiser chapter F1 corral is a *fantastic* event....

One price for pretty much all of your meals and adult beverage
(read: a nice variety of kegs of import beer) for the weekend and
they are located 3 blocks south of the track.... If you go to F1
without spending as much of your free time as possible at the corral,
 you are mising out!

That's because there isn't one, or not one that I can remember in recent
history. I think there was a BMWNA sponsored one about 3-4 years ago.

Try to make it to the ALMS race at Infineon Raceway (formerly Sears
Point). The Sacramento and Golden Gate Chapters host a well attended
corral. In addition, the location of the tent is also one of the best
spots at the track!

My cousin is looking for some ideas to try before he calls the tow
truck. He hopped in his car on Saturday morning and it would not
turn over. The car was perfect on Friday. Every time he turns the
key, he gets a click click sound kind like a starter that doesn't have
enough power to engage, but it is about 10 times louder than any
starter he's ever heard. I listened to it over the phone and it is
loud. Also, the check engine light starts flashing like crazy when he
turns the key to the on position, and he's never seen that before.
He's going to hook up a battery charger just to make sure that the
battery is fully charged, but his lights are quite bright and all
other electrical functions act like they are getting full power, so he
doesn't think the battery charger is going to help.

Send me your suggestions and I'll pass them along to him.

Thanks,

Kurt

I should also add that it is a 5-spd, in case there are some
electronics associated with the transmission that could be the
culprit.

I would also suggest that he check the battery as you mentioned. It
doesn't take too much of a low battery to give you issues with the
starter.

Ed,

You tried putting a magnetic pickup (flex type) down into all the crevices
in the general area in which you worked or tried blowing air into the lower
regions of the motor and then looking under the car?

I think Ed is talking about the metal spring clip on plug connector, not the
one securing the injector to the rail.

It's not available separately. 12 52 1 706 121 should be a 2 pin connector
that uses the same clip, and lists at $3.60, but there's a risk it has a
different clip style.

I have plenty of old fuel rails around here, if you're stuck, drop me a note
and I'll ship one out to you.

FWIW, the car will usually suffer no ill effects from one missing clip,
unless it's #1 or #6. And..... you usually don't need to remove them, just
pull one side out of the slot and that's enough to release the entire clip.

Subject: I6 fuel consumption - (Originally was snow cables)
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Sometime back I inquired about snow chains/cables for an E39 for a trip
from the SF Bay area up to Lake Tahoe and back.

Said trip took place this past weekend, Thursday afternoon to Sunday
afternoon and in the context of chains or cables - a total bust.
Weather had lots of snow in weeks leading up to the trip, and last
night's news predicted a new additional 4-12" in the Tahoe basin - I
got in and out on clear, dry pavement both ways!! Sometimes it IS
better to be lucky than good. One recommendation from lessons learned
growing up in New Jersey - I threw a small container of sand in the
trunk. Since I was parking on the edge of a plowed driveway, all my 4
tires were on about 2" of packed snow that thawed and melted somewhat
during the day, and refroze at night. When I tried to drive out, I was
unable to get initial traction in either 1st or 2'd gear (traction
control was "on" and my right foot was very gentle) and could feel the
rear start to step out to the side. Problem was there was another car
on one side and a 5' snow vertical wall snow bank on the other. A hand
full of sand in front of each rear tire and the problem went away.
Sure beat putting on chains/cables just to get 15' out of the drive!
Tires are factory original ContiTouringContact labeled as "M&S".

Some folk have occasionally asked what kind of gas milage to expect
from their cars. Using this trip as a data point, here's my experience
with a 528i 5 speed:
Total miles 558
total gal. 18.5
fuel consumption 30.16 mpg

If I factor that I bought gas and drove back and forth to work for 4
days before leaving and subtract out the 18 miles at about 17-18 mpg I
get in that short stop and go driving,
Total miles 540
total gal. 17.5
fuel consumption 30.86 mpg

I get similar fuel consumption driving from here to LA and back - so
things are consistent.

This includes some driving around the local Tahoe area. Traffic
conditions going and coming were good, and speeds were :-) - if one
were staying with the flow of traffic, which was notably over the
posted legal limit, one could essentially cruise at 80.
