Did I hear a while back that a wavering MPG needle can
be a sign of a dying O2 sensor?

When my car first starts up and has not yet warmed up,
it runs badly when the R's run between 2-3K.

Also, when driving at a constant speed, I often notice
the MPG needle bouncing back and forth in a
square-wave type fashion.

I don't think I've seen the needle bouncing as much
after the car has warmed up, but I can't say I've paid
attention to that so much since the car runs better
after it has warmed up. When I say warmed up, I mean
the stock needle is straight up, but my VDO water temp
gauge says 120F or so.

any ideas on this?

My E30 with an M50 has developed the swinging RPM needle as you described. I
previously had a bad O2 sensor but did not have the swinging RPM needle so
I'm not sure if that is the cause.

Are you throwing any codes?

Mark

No, I'm not throwing any codes (only the 1444
terminating code).

Does anyone know if M Coupe wheels/tires will fit on
an E36 sedan (1996 328i) with the stock suspension?

Thanks,

MZ3 (coupe or roadster) front wheels are a standard E36 size at
7.5 x 17 w/41mm offset.

MZ3 rear wheels are unique to the MZ3 at 9 x 17 w/8mm of offset
and would maybe fit onto an E34 or E32 but will not fit on an E36
without likely massive fender rolling, since they're at least an inch
farther out than the effective offset of around 30mm which people
run 9" wheels with.

The mpg meter is not directly related to the O2 sensor.

The mpg meter is moved by the DME, which is reporting fuel consumption. So,
indirectly, the O2 sensor is related to the meter.

However, the O2 sensor also has nothing to do with how the engine runs when
cold. It takes up to 3 or 4 minutes before the O2 sensor comes on line, so
cold rough running is indicitive of another problem, usually an air leak or
a bad coolant temp sender. It could also be a defective fuel injector or
pressure regulator.

During this rough running stage, the DME will be varying fuel input in an
attempt to stabilize the idle. As the mpg meter is run from a algorithm of
fuel injector duty cycle, known (assumed) fuel pressure and vehicle speed,
it will bounce around as the duty cycle is changed by the DME.

Bill Gosma confirmed that he ran Eibach springs and Bilstein Sports on his
325iC. The ride height was lowered some, but the ride was more pleasant
than my '90 325i on M3 springs with basically the same shocks. Great
compromise suspension for a street car.

Yeah, you're correct........ I had Eibach ProKit lowering springs and
Bilstein sport shocks-----nice setup.

Yes. Bill Gosma put some, I think they were, Eibach springs on his '88
convertible. His goals were the same as Paul's, and he really liked the
results. (Bill, did I get this right?)

Brett,

Is there any particular reason that you are not using Mobil 1?
