My dad has a '02 E53 X5 3.0L with Nav and OBC. The instrument cluster in his car is kind of flakey and he wants to get it replaced. However, the dealer wants an arm and a leg for it. I'm wondering if I can pick one up off of eBay for him. Of course, the question because, 'which one' since realoem.com lists a bunch of then. Lastly, what the heck happens the to mileage if the "new" cluster has more or less compared to the original cluster? Can we just leave it? Will it cause some sort of computer "fault" within the system? Will the car self-destruct? Thanks! ________________________________________________ Message sent using UebiMiau 2.7.10 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2007 19:34:51 -0400 From: KMS- Brett Anderson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Yoda <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, uuc Digest <[email protected]> Subject: Re: '02 E53 X5 3.0L instrument cluster question Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> You will be wasting your money getting one off Ebay unless you plan on trying to use it for parts. The cluster will be "assigned" to the VIN that's in it. That cannot be changed. As a result, it will display incorrect mileage with a tamper warning dot illuminated, and if there are different options on the donor car, some functions may not work correctly. As to the dealer wanting an arm and a leg, call BMW NA. They will authorize the dealer to replace the cluster on their dime. You'll probably have to pay labour, but they shouldn't try and get you for more than 1.5 hours. Brett Anderson KMS Yoda wrote: > All, > I have a question. I did some initial diagnosis, but that didn't isolate the problem, and I could use some help with the next steps. The problem started with occasional "hick-ups" while driving -- momentary loss of power, all instrument cluster warning lights on. The car then stalled and wouldn't start at all. My first suspicion was the in-tank fuel pump (the car has 140K miles). We then confirmed that everything on the fuel side seems to be OK -- fuel pump itself, fuel pump relay, main relay, wiring, fuses, etc.. However, with the ignition ON, the fuel pump relay is not getting the signal from the DME, which makes me suspect that there is something wrong on the ignition side, and the DME is preventing fuel flow as a safety measure. Is my supposition correct? Where should I be looking next? TIA, Alex ------------------------------ End of [bmwuucdigest] digest(12 messages) **********
