I've happened across a '97 750il, 147k mi, blk/blk NAV, PDC, EDC, TV, for
$5k. It's in pretty good shape for the miles...never crashed, CA/TX car. All
gadgets work, needs maintenance, but nothing expensive is broken...YET!

I need a commuter...and this one commutes REALLY nicely...I was really
looking for an e34 touring...

I've begun justifying it to myself, as you can see. I've even shown it to my
wife..AND convinced her it is a reasonable car...which, of course we all
know, it isn't!

I guess what I'm looking for here is for y'all to tell me I'm crazy, and I
should run away and not look back....this is a really nice car...

I'd think you could part it out for more than 5k if something big broke.

The style 5 wheels alone on that car are worth around ~$600-700 as-is, and
around $1200 refinished. Personally, I think it is a good deal-if it was me,
I would take some of the money saved and replace the headlight covers,
foglights, front bumper trim and give it a nice all over detail, and that
car would look great!

That's a steal. A $100K original-MSRP car for $5K 10 years later, and it's
in good shape with reasonable mileage?

That's the curse of the 7s... horrible resale value because the owners are
the "I must have a car that shows I have 'arrived' and only brand-new will
do that for me" type.

The E38 750, from my own experience and plenty of customers, is actually
quite reliable. More reliable than a 740, free of most of the 740 issues
(radiator neck cracking, water pump, brake rotors, other V8 issues). The
750 shares the instrument cluster pixel problem, which is a minor annoyance
at worst. The EDC dampers seem to last a very long time and the larger
brakes are more durable.

I've had my '98 750 since 2000 and the only actual repair items it has
needed were rear pitman arms and fan clutch (although the fact that the
second one literally exploded cost me quite a lot of money in incidental
repairs, but that could happen to any BMW).

The only downside to 750 ownership is the fuel mileage. On highway trips,
you will see 20-22mpg. In mixed or local driving, expect to see 12-16mpg.
A light foot helps, but the bankvault silence inside the car masks how
quickly you are accelerating.

For $5K, what else can you buy that won't be a bucket? A same-year E36 328i
in good shape will be at least $6K, an E39 528i at least $10K. Do the math,
$5K savings pays for a lot of gas and it's already way down the depreciation
slope so you can't lose much if you sell it in 1-3 years. $5K total,
there's not much to lose!

Paul,

I use Sweeney BMW in Cincinnati, OH. 1-800-543-5253, ask for Linda or Matt in
BMW parts and mention you are a club member; both of these folks are extremely
knowledgeable and willing to order anything you may need (BTW: both previously
worked at the BMW Store).

Hi group,
Anyone have a mail order friendly dealer that you recommend? I need to
buy a few dealer parts for my 1991 M5 (timing chain tensioner,
floormats, AFM boot, etc.). The local dealer here in KC (Baron BMW) is
a good dealer if your car is newish, but they don't stock much for the
old cars and they charge list price or better for most stuff. As always,
thanks for the help. I would own BMW's without this list (I freely
admit this addiction), but the list sure makes it easier and more
enjoyable.

Regards,

Subject: E23 dies after starting
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have an E23 732i that has been running fine. Then the other day I
started it up and let it idle for a while and then when I went to put it
in gear it died. No problem just restart right? Wrong. It fires catches
for 10 seconds and then no matter what the throttle position is it dies.
But first before the engine spins down the tach dies. Pretty sure it is
electrical. Seems to be loosing electrical power to something that
includes the tach. Any quick ideas before I am dragging out the volt
meter?

Thanks

The fact that the tach drops before the engine shuts off implies that
it's losing power to the DME or the DME is shutting off the ignition.

First step is the main relay. It's original mounting position was by
the heater valve, on the right side of the firewall. It has large read
wires associated with it.

Paul,
$5k for this car is stealin' IMHO
Kid at a shop I've used has the previous model 750 and told me that it's
actually quite rugged. Normal maint. items are pricey for the v12s (think
caps & rotors...) but I've heard they hold up quite well. He fixed an oil
leak on one of the valve covers. The first thing I'd check into would be the
transmission. Is it solid? (hard to tell, I know), has it ever been
serviced? Of course, my perspective is coming from one who does all their
own work. I'd be scared to have to bring one of these into a shop for
service, but, again, I have no experience to offer in that regard.

Heck, I'd buy it! But I'd get in trouble as I already have 4 toys...is it
close to Wash DC perchance?

Cheers!

True, if those are real BBS wheels, they are worth close to $1k!

I have about 1mm thick build-up inside intake manifold and around injectors.
Same in a head above valves.

What product works best to clean this? This is plastic manifold from V8 engine.

What causing it to accumulate?

Thanks,

Ivan,
I use Carburetor Cleaner on the AL manifolds. Not sure what it will do to
the polycarbonate material on your engine, but it works well on that
gunk...same gunk. Mostly it's due to Oil Blowback that gets baked on real
well. An adhoc coating mechanism if you will.

Cheers!
