Yeah, if more people left California like he did, things wouldn't be so
crowded here. Oh wait, that isn't what you meant, is it? :^) Plus,
I'd rather it be other people leaving and not people like John. Oh, never
mind.

ha ha, yeah, I miss Scott too.

Michigan is pretty snowy right now, so I'm still driving sideways a
lot (much like my autocross runs). But now I'm in an AWD Subaru
Forester, a whole lot less stylish than the E30 ragtop. (BTW, if anyone
ever tries to sell you Yokohama Geolandar G900 all-seasons and tells you
they'll be fine in the snow, they're lying. "FUN" in the snow, not
"FINE" in the snow. )
I put real snowflake tires on the wife's 528 (Dunlop Winter Sport M3)
and it seems very sure-footed. Even the ignition has better traction
now that I replaced the cylinder!

anyway... thanks for the compliments on the pics. Sorry they are so
huge - I sized them on my laptop screen, which has a
bajillion-by-kerjillion screen resolution, so they didn't look so big at
first. Hey at least I compressed them down so the file size isn't too
huge. :)

Moved from CA to MI late 2005, family is here, and we can slow down
enough for me to quit work and go back to school to pursue my mechanical
engineering degree at WMU. We live in "yes there really is a"
Kalamazoo.

(Posted to the list in case anybody else's bolhuijo-locater was out of
kilter) :)

Dude, the GGC autocrosses just haven't been the same without you.

You can keep up with the goings-on here, though:

What, are still on dial-up or something? :-)

They certainly show all you need to know, though. Nice job, John (and

Selling the 530i pick up truck. It's in dire need of a lot of work to
bring it up to where it should be.

We don't have the time, and I'm tired of watching it rot into the
ground. Currently listed on ebay http://tinyurl.com/37trgu without
reserve.

Spread the word.

I have a quick drip leak of coolant that is winding up behind the crankshaft
pulley and then running down the front edge of the oil pan. I can't
seem to locate
the source. The thermostat and hoses seem to be dry. There is dried/caked
antifreeze residue on most of the pulleys.

Is the most likely culprit the water pump gasket? A lot of stuff to
pull off just to
check. Hoping someone has been there, done that.

Thanks,

Matt Tremmel

Water pump seal.

The water pump "gasket" on that car is a simple rubber o-ring, that if
not pinched, will likely outlast the water pump.

The seal, on the other hand, wears with use, and wear of the bearing
behind it allows increased radial runout of the shaft, further wearing
the seal. This is typically the failure mode on most water pumps and the
second most typical on that particular car (impeller disintegration
likely being most common).

The o-ring in my M54 was somehow not installed correctly at the
factory or something, and it had a slow leak ever since I bought the
car new. The symptoms were as the original poster described, where
coolant dribbles down the front of the block and gets flung around by
the crank pulley.

In my case, I didn't feel it was severe enough to mess with, so I
waited till the pump started to go (bearing rattle but no failure or
leak through the seal), replaced the whole works, and the leak is now gone.

I would bet its the water pump gasket not likely - how many miles?
