My '98 328i spit out its main fan/accessories belt Monday in to a
mangled, shredded knot. I picked up a new main belt and A/C belt from
the dealer yesterday. I put the main belt on, but as soon as I started
the engine, the belt came off. I tried once more, with the same results.
Looking closer, I then noticed the power steering pump pulley was at an
odd angle to the rest of the pulleys which was causing the belt to come
off-track. I pushed a bit on the PS pump to see if it was loose (not
hard, really!) and the whole pump fell off. The bracket holding the pump
to the engine simply broke. Perhaps it was hit by some road debris at
one point? I can't really tell why; I just now have the pump dangling
from the PS hose lines.

So - help! The broken bracket appears to be part of the assembly that
holds the alternator on to the block. I'm having zero luck figuring out
what piece it is on www.realoem.com, though. Does anyone have a part
number or description of the piece? I've come home with the wrong part
from the dealer before, so I'd like some advance knowledge of what I
need before I try to get the dealer guys to find it.

Thanks!

Malcolm

That "bracket" IIRC is part of the oil filter housing. That's why you can't
find it.

I actually have a spare, but I'm out of town for 60 days so I'm no help.....

Marco

There's a couple brackets here,

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CD33&mospid=47501&btnr=32_0720&hg=32&fg=15

but they attach to the oil filter housing, #1 here

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CD33&mospid=47501&btnr=11_1542&hg=11&fg=30

I'd check for loose and missing bolts first.
