they did get the cruise sponsored. no way they (or we) could afford it
without outside funds.

i bet 2) is impossible to get around. mit sells out their conference
space and makes good money on it. no way they would let a cheapo
conference in unless we had a major champion inside. and i doubt there
are perl hackers in the positions we need. but we have to ask around. so
anyone with connections to the tute should talk yapc up with them.
