a classic should have a CF card with NK.bin on it in the CF card slot,
i.e. the one at the back, not the PCMCIA slot with an adapter. An mPower
should have an SD card formatted to FAT16 in the SD card slot, with NK.bin
on it. A classic NK.bin is about 25megs and an mPower NK.bin is about 40
megs.

hold down dots 4,5 and press and release the reset button. You should
hear different tones to the normal reset beep - this means you're in the
bootloader and that something is about to happen. You need the power
connected during this (this is because if the battery ran out during the
upgrade process it would be very bad for all concerned!).

let me know if any of that helps,
regards
Andy.
