What you say is true, but I liken the PM to a mini computer running Windows and JAWS. Therefore, the problems encountered in JAWS on a PC (focus issues, programs not being accessible, and so on) can occur in the PM since it runs JAWS on Windows. The BN has no such problems because it was made from the ground up with the blind user in mind, so it will always be accessible. Obvious drawbacks include no 3rd party applications and a higher cost, but if you want to never worry about your machine not working with a program or anything along those lines then the BN is best. I am not trying to start a debate here, just point out some things.

Have a great day,
Alex

As a current user of that product, I would put a couple of
caveats on
these statements.

First, The PM is the better choice if you actually want to be
running
Windows.

Second, my sense from the discussions on this list, is that the
PM does
a much better job of handling Word documents.

3. The PM does run Instant Messenger, so that would be something
to
consider if it is important to you.

I also have the impression that BN users have to perform resets
much
more frequently, though that could be just an impression.

Just some food for thought.
Cheers,
Donna

The omni will run CE 5, but Windows Mobile 6. Also, the MPower
has 125 mb ram as will the Omni. However, I agree completely
with what you said and recommend the same course of action.

Hello,

Comparing the SmallTalk Ultra is apples to oranges since this
device
runs Windows XP.

In the case of the PAC Mate however, in my humble oppinion,
we should
definitely stay far away from it and continue to follow the
BrailleNote
devices if we need customized notetaker for the blind
functionality.
My reasons for suggesting this course of action is the following:
1. PAC Mate, even upgraded will have only have half the RAM of
the currently available M-power line.
2. Absolutely no other on-board hardware changes are being made
to the PAC Mate. In other words, we are still stuck with one USB
port to serve client and host devices. There are still no SD
card
slots... only two CF slots. On-board Bluetooth support is not
forth-coming. They are not upgrading the processor... only
doubling
the RAM to 128 MEGS which is, as I have already stated, only half
of
what the M-power units are sporting.

PAC Mate running Windows Mobile 5 is going to be dog slow! As for
me
and my house... we are staying with, and recommending the
Humanware
family of notetakers.

I'm not sure what the future holds, but in order to upgrade to
say,
8.0, you must buy 7.5 somewhere down the line. I won't
tell you what
kind of machine to buy, but I will say that the Pac Mate and
Small
Talk Ultra are not going to provide the same efficiency as the
Bn.

Hi list
very interesting listening to the posts on the upgrade.
I live in the uk and feel that the upgrade is not worth it for
me.
I am not sure what the cost is but I will wait to see what the
future holds.
I am very busy piano tuning playing chess and living a full life
so,
I may have missed some emails especially concerning the future of
our
braille notes.
I am a pk user and note the pac mate is moving forward in
October.
does anyone know about the future of our grate product?
I am very seriously considering purchasing the small talk ultra
for
portability and the use of windows xp.
I would love to be able to stream from say the bbc with my pk but
of
course this cannot be done.
I work away a lot so need portability.
cheers.
the gps on the pk is the best.
